you can flatten out round tooth picks with smooth jaw pliers

These are cute. <3 chopsticks.

One can also use natural broom straw for the round ones. Or old backyard/field grass stems, though I think the latter tend to have larger piths/cores. They paint/varnish alright (bit slippery) and some don't take to staining well. But they show a pretty natural grain when they do take.
